So you’re going to be a new mama, and you plan to breastfeed your baby. Now what? Well, just like with any new adventure, you’re going to need some gear in order to get the job done. Here’s what experienced mamas recommend for those who are new to nursing.

Nursing bra
When your baby is hungry, you don’t want to waste time fumbling to remove a regular bra. A well-fitted nursing bra will make it much easier to feed your baby on the go and can also provide much-needed support for milk-heavy breasts.

Cover-up
Having some type of cover-up can give you a little privacy and make you more comfortable when you inevitably need to breastfeed outside the home. You don’t need anything fancy here: even a good-sized baby blanket will work.

Breast pads
Breast pads can be worn under a bra and are essential for handling inconvenient and potentially embarrassing milk leaks. There are many different types, both reusable and disposable. Check out other mamas’ recommendations and try a few until you find the best breast pads for your needs.

Gel pads
Cooling gel pads offer serious relief for painful nipples. Again, there’s a lot to choose from out there, but these Medela cooling gel pads are often recommended by moms in the know.

Wet bags
Any new mama can easily rattle off a dozen great uses for a wet bag. When it comes to breastfeeding specifically, a wet bag is useful for storing used breast pads until you can throw them in the wash.

Skin Balm
Finding a good nipple cream or all-purpose balm can help with cracked, dry or sore nipples. Look for something without fragrances and containing high-quality ingredients so that it’s safe for both you and your baby.

Milk storage containers
Pumped milk can be stored in a variety of containers as long as they are food-safe and BPA-free. If you’re sending your milk to Bébé Bru to be freeze-dried for later use, we recommend using breast milk bags like these and then freezing your milk as flat as possible.

Nipple shields
If your baby has trouble latching for any reason or if your nipples are especially tender, nipple shields can be a lifesaver. Enlist your lactation specialist for support in choosing and sizing your nipple shields and to assist you in learning to use them with your baby.

Heating pad
Warming action can be soothing to hurting breasts, and it can also foster milk production. For this purpose, you can buy specially made warming gel pads, use warm wet washcloths, or simply set a regular heating pad on low.

Rags or washcloths
Don’t forget to always carry a few rags in your nursing bag. Good for spills, spit-up, and anything else that might get messy along the way.

These supplies will have you covered for almost all of your breastfeeding needs. And when you can’t be right there with your baby, Bébé Bru has got you covered, too: learn more about how we help mamas like you live their best lives with our safe and convenient freeze-dried breast milk packages.
